Blogging Strategies: Things I learned While Freelancing

I know what you're thinking: "In this economy? With A.I?"

Yes, sounds strange but the art of blogging is in some way cathartic. The Pre-A.I world felt more fulfilling. Writing, creating, and sharing work brought a sense of gratification. So, even if you do generate a blog, I do hope you give writing down your thoughts a shot.

Today, I’m going to walk you through some of my blog writing practices that I picked up during my internship days (kind of from the dinosaur era).

The Magic of Storytelling in Blog Writing

Stories are powerful. They create connections, evoke emotions, and make your message memorable. When you weave storytelling into your blog, you’re not just sharing information—you’re inviting readers on a journey.

Here’s how I like to do it:

  1. Start with a relatable scenario: Maybe a challenge you faced or a common problem your audience experiences.

  2. Build tension or curiosity: What was at stake? What did you learn?

  3. Offer a resolution or insight: This is where your main message or advice comes in.

  4. Keep it conversational: Write like you’re chatting with a friend over coffee.

For instance, instead of saying “Effective blog writing requires planning,” try “I used to scramble for blog ideas at midnight, until I discovered a simple planning trick that changed everything.”

Crafting Headlines That Hook and Hold

Let’s be honest: your headline is the first impression. It’s the gatekeeper of your blog post. If it doesn’t grab attention, your readers won’t even get to the juicy stuff inside. So, how do you create headlines that pop?

  • Be clear and specific: Avoid vague titles. Instead of “Tips for Writing,” try “5 Proven Blog Writing Strategies India’s Top Bloggers Swear By.”

  • Use numbers and lists: People love lists because they promise easy-to-digest information.

  • Ask questions: This invites curiosity. For example, “Struggling with Blog Ideas? Here’s How to Fix That.”

  • Add a touch of emotion or urgency: Words like “ultimate,” “essential,” or “now” can make your headline more compelling.

Remember, a great headline sets the tone for the entire post. It’s like the welcome mat to your content house.

Structuring Your Blog for Maximum Impact

A well-structured blog post is like a well-organised closet - everything in its place, easy to find, and pleasing to the eye. Here’s a simple structure that works wonders:

  • Introduction: Hook your reader and set expectations.

  • Body: Break down your main points into clear, digestible sections. Use subheadings, bullet points, and short paragraphs.

  • Examples and anecdotes: These make your content relatable and practical.

  • Call to action (CTA): What do you want your readers to do next? Comment, share, subscribe, or try a tip?

Don’t forget to sprinkle in keywords naturally. Overstuffing your post with keywords is like trying to fit into jeans two sizes too small - uncomfortable and off-putting.

Writing with Clarity and Personality

Here’s a little secret: clarity beats cleverness every time. Your readers want to understand your message without decoding it. So, keep your language simple and your sentences punchy.

But that doesn’t mean your writing has to be boring. Inject your personality! Use contractions like “I’m” and “you’re” to keep things casual. Throw in rhetorical questions to engage readers. And don’t be afraid to show a bit of vulnerability or humor. It makes you human and relatable.

For example, instead of “One must ensure proper keyword placement,” try “Ever wondered where to sneak in those keywords without sounding like a robot? I’ve got you covered.”

Optimising for SEO Without Losing Your Voice

SEO can feel like a puzzle, right? You want to rank well on Google but also keep your writing natural and engaging. Here’s how to strike that balance:

  • Use keywords thoughtfully: Place them in your title, subheadings, and a few times in the body.

  • Write for humans first: Google’s algorithms love content that satisfies readers.

  • Include internal and external links: This boosts credibility and keeps readers exploring your site.

  • Optimise images: Use descriptive alt text (like the ones here!) and compress images for faster loading.

Keeping Your Readers Coming Back for More

Building a loyal audience takes time and consistency. Here are some tips to keep your readers hooked:

  • Publish regularly: Whether it’s weekly or biweekly, stick to a schedule.

  • Engage with comments: Responding to readers shows you care.

  • Offer value: Solve problems, answer questions, and share insights.

  • Mix up your content: Use how-tos, listicles, interviews, and personal stories.

And don’t forget to promote your posts on social media and newsletters. A great blog post is only as good as the number of people who read it.

Your Next Steps to Blog Writing Success

Remember, mastering creative blog copywriting is a journey, not a sprint. Be patient with yourself, keep learning, and most importantly, have fun with it. After all, your unique voice is your greatest asset.

Happy blogging!
